Some chilly Fall-like air will be on its way this week. And with that, overnight low temperatures look to be possibly flirting with the upper 30's on a few nights. So, when do we typically see the first sub 40º temp? The temperatures I'm using are from the Purdue Airport which has a bit of a warm bias compared to local rural locations, but it is the "official" site for Lafayette so we'll run with its numbers. I started with 1980, as that should give us a good enough indicator.
2010: Oct 4...34º
2009: Oct 5...36º
2008: Oct 2...38º
2007: Oct 13...35º
2006: Sept 29...36º
2005: Sept 30...39º
2004: Sept 30...39º
2003: Sept 29...38º
2002: Oct 7...39º
2001: Sept 25...39º
2000: Sept 26...37º
1999: Sept 22...36º
1998: Oct 2...38º
1997: Oct 2...39º
1996: Oct 4...39º
1995: Sept 22...34º
1994: Oct 10...35º
1993: Sept 29...35º
1992: Sept 29...39º
1991: Sept 19...37º
1990: Sept 23...39º
1989: Oct 3...35º
1988: Oct 5...35º
1987: Oct 1...37º
1986: Sept 8...37º
1985: Sept 24...38º
1984: Sept 16...37º
1983: Sept 23...38º
1982: Sept 23...39º
1981: Oct 2...36º
1980: Oct 4...35º
So since 1980, the earliest sub 40º temp was September 8, 1986...the latest was October 13, 2007. All in all, it seems like the last week of September/first week of October is the typical time period for our first sub 40º temp.
The record earliest date for the first sub 40º temp at LAF is August 24, 1965 with a reading of 37º.
